A mole is basically a cluster of melanocytes, which are melanin-producing cells. They develop in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors both before and after birth. While moles on the face have long been referred to as beauty marks, some people don't particularly find them attractive, especially when they develop on their own skin. If you're not happy with a facial mole, there are procedures available to remove them from your face.
Surgical Excision
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends surgical excision to remove moles, including those on the face. Surgical excision is a minor surgical procedure where the mole and surrounding skin is removed with a scalpel. Sometimes, a sharp punch device that cuts a clean circle around the mole is used. After the mole is extracted, the wound is sutured and left to heal. It's commonly done with a local anesthetic in your doctor's office, so you may end up having the mole removed on the same day as a consultation.
Shave Excision
A procedure known as a shave excision can also help remove moles, according to the Mayo Clinic. In this cosmetic procedure, the mole is first injected with lidocaine. This agent not only numbs the area, but it also helps to raise the mole further away from the skin, explains Redding Dermatology. A scalpel is then used to basically shave the mole off the skin, leaving the area underneath flush with the rest of the skin. Since the skin itself isn't cut, no suture is needed, and the skin is left to heal on its own.
Sunscreen & Makeup
Sometimes, a mole isn't considered viable for removal, advises Redding Dermatology. In this situation, make sure to always apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor, SPF, of at least 30 whenever you head outdoors. Reapply the sunscreen every two hours you're out in the sun. This ensures that the mole won't darken as a result of sun exposure. It also helps protect against skin cancer. Melanoma can develop within a preexisting facial mole.
After the application of sunscreen, cover the mole with makeup specifically formulated to conceal moles, suggests the Mayo Clinic. This is a viable alternative to the removal of a mole, especially when your doctor or dermatologist is unable to excise or shave it from your skin.
