Discover the Skincare Products Hiding in Your Kitchen

I love finding out about ways to use common household products – like food – to create skincare products. That’s why I asked skincare experts to share their favorite tricks for turning every day food items (like oatmeal, potatoes and sugar) to make amazing creams, masks, scrubs and more!
I was really surprised by the completely common foods our experts recommended – I had the ingredients for all of these recipes in my cupboards or fridge already – and I’d be willing to be that many of you do too!
Check out the “food for skincare” recipes submitted by skincare and beauty experts:

Oatmeal for Shaving Sensitive Skin

If you’re like me, the thought of shaving cream makes you shudder. For many women, the chemicals in shaving creams cause what we know as razor rash. But take heart! There is a solution. And for those who would rather purchase it than make it, Ive already done the work for you!
Simply place a cupful of raw, organic, traditional oatmeal on a square of cheesecloth. Tie up the cloth with a cord or string. Allow the pack to soak in warm water for about 10 minutes then rub on skin and shave.
*Just a note, oatmeal wont foam up like store bought shaving cream.

Potato Poltice

Shred any type of potato and apply it generously to your entire face and neck for 20 minutes or more. Rinse with warm water.
Potatoes reduce inflammation (reduce redness in your skin), contains anti-biotic properties (heals acne orblemishes) and draws out external abscesses, carbuncles and eczema. They also contain beneficial intestinal flora, vitamin C, enzymes and minerals all of which are essential to beautiful skin.

Homemade Sugar Scrub

You can make your own sugar scrub for pennies by simply mixing your favorite oil into a large handful of sugar. Olive oil straight from your pantry will do the trick; with its high concentration of oleic acid, it regenerates skin cells and literally attracts moisture to your skin. Or look in your health food store for inexpensive Sweet Almond or Grapeseed oil. Both are rich in essential fatty acids and beneficial vitamins.
Personalize your sugar scrub with a few drops of fragrant essential oils. Lavender and neroli are balancing and relaxing: a little during your bed time bath will send you into a deep, sound sleep. Bergamot, with its uplifting properties, promotes happiness. Vetiver and Jasmine both have aphrodisiac qualities, a perfect way to enhance a romantic interlude!

Coconut Oil Cures

Coconut oil has both antibacterial and antifungal properties. Not only is it great for cooking, but it is a great solution to everyday problems. Burns? Cuts? Scrapes? Itchy bugbites? Sunburn? Ran out of toothpaste? Use coconut oil for all of these problems to relieve the burning and stop infection.
Coconut oil can also be used as a moisturizer and deep conditioner for your hair! Your skin and hair will thank you and leave you smelling coco-nutty fresh.

Dry skin loves fat!

Avocados are high in fat and thereby very moisturizing. Simply open a ripe avocado, spoon out the flesh and mash it, and apply to skin. Leave on for as many minutes as you would like (10 minutes usually does it), then gently wash off with warm water or with a warm, dampened wash cloth.
