Straightening Of The Hair
This is a permanent wave in reverse. The chemical method is by far the most successful, though waxes and gums are sometimes used temporarily to smooth out hair. Coarse hair is the easiest to straighten. It is not obligatory to do the whole head, the more problematic areas around the hairline and temples can be straightened separately. Straightening makes hair less heavy. It should not be done more than once in a year; it is preferable to do it at the start of summer, as curly hair is particularly affected by hot weather humidity. Afterwards hair should be protected from sun and seawater, and it can react to the chlorine of swimming pools.
Because it is a more complex and difficult procedure than waving, few women are capable of doing it at home. This is how it is done professionally.
Method for Straightening of Hair
Hair is shampooed, blotted dry and combed, thestraightening lotion (mixed 15 minutes before head) is put on by brush or with fingers, soaking all surface; it is then combed through the hair. Head is wrapped in plastic for 20 minutes. Hair strands are now soft, and the next step---the most important and most arduous ---is to continuously comb from 10 to 20 minutes, relaxing or altering the curl pattern. Afterwards hair is rinsed, toweled to remove excess water, combed; then a neutralizer is applied, combed through and takes about 5 minutes to stabilize straightness before rinsed out. The process takes about 2 hours. Bleached, tinted or toned hair may not react as well as natural hair.
