Long-Lasting Makeup: 9 Tips for All-Day, All-Night Beauty

Want stay-put makeup? Test these quick tricks! By Marie Calica
With makeup, less touch-up means less hassle. In the day, you can skip the tedium of nose-powdering, lipstick-reapplying bathroom breaks; at night, you can go straight to your after-hours activities without having to bat (or re-coat) an eyelash. Less wasted work time, longer party hours—that’s what you’ll get if you follow these fool-proof makeup tips!

1.    READ THE LABEL.

Your foundation, eye shadow, concealer, or blush are less likely to come off if you know whether you have oily, dry, combination, or sensitive skin. Once you’ve determined that, use products tailor-made for your skin type. For instance, oil-absorbing makeup controls shine for oily complexions.

2.    EXFOLIATE.

Dull, flaky complexions make it difficult for makeup to stay on, let alone stick. The solution: use a soft brush or a cleanser with light beads to slough off dead skin. This gives way to softer, smoother skin—and in turn, makes it easier for your makeup to adhere.

3.    PREP YOUR SKIN.

Always start with a clean face. Before applying any makeup, start by cleansing your skin. Next, apply a moisturizer or foundation primer. Allot a few minutes for the solution to “set” in the skin before applying foundation; otherwise, your makeup will slide right off.

4.    SET WITH POWDER.

Loose powder keeps your makeup in place. Always end the makeup application process with a layer of this classic tool. Use a sponge to pick up the product (tap the excess off to avoid blotchy patches), then press the powder into your skin. Apply more powder to oilier areas like your forehead, nose, and chin.

5.    CREAM VS. POWDER?

Cream formulations work well with dry skin, while powder lasts longer on oily complexions. When mixing the two, apply cream first, then set with powder.
