Make Up Tips for the Matric Farewell

This time of the year mothers start worrying and daughters start scouring every magazine for the best dress on the planet for the BIG event. Boys and girls start worrying about their skins! They want to look perfect and they want their complexions to be radiant for this special night of the year. This article will provide you with some tips on how they can achieve the best look for the matric farewell.

Skin

They should start by looking after their skin from today onwards! Girls need to prepare a smooth canvas for their make-up and boys need to have their skin as clear and clean as possible because they cannot hide bad skin. Oh, and boys need to moisturise too, not only the girls.

Facial skin should be kept free of build up by using a gentle cleanser in the mornings and in the evenings. When cleansing the face, it is done by gently using upward strokes and never by tugging, pulling or scrubbing too hard. A toner can be used afterwards according to skin type and followed by a moisturiser.

Skin must be kept hydrated in order to look good as a dry skin does not have that healthy glow to it. Don’t forget to recommend the daily use of a SPF (sun protection factor) to protect their skins from the sun’s harmful rays.

Using a gentle exfoliating scrub two or three times a week is a good idea as well. It helps to remove dead skin cells and exposes healthy skin underneath. Do not scrub too hard, a gentle massage followed by moisturising will achieve the best results.

Ensure that there is time for enough sleep every night so that the body is ready for the all night party!

Preparation

By practicing the application of their make-up, they will know what is going to look good and what is not going to work. They should start by experimenting with different styles of make up until they find the one that suits them and their outfit the best. Good preparation will prevent last minute disasters and tears. Tears and make-up do not mix well!

A Flawless Start

The best technique to ensure a good look is to start with clean skin and moisturiser, and then use a corrector stick or a concealer if necessary. Use this sparingly as a little goes a long way and it can easily look overdone. It’s good to know that pink tones neutralise pinky-blue darkness and peach tones neutralise purple-brown darkness.

A yellow-toned concealer, one shade lighter than the person’s complexion will brighten the area under the eyes. They should take care with the quantity they use and blend it well into the skin. This is followed by a thin layer of base over the entire face. The correct colour is the one that ‘disappears’ into the skin and blends with their natural colour. A loose powder applied with a brush over the base will create that flawless look.

Blusher A warm tint can now be added by dusting some bronzing powder over cheeks, forehead, nose and chin. The best way to apply blusher is to smile and then dust some blusher on the apples of the cheeks, and then blend towards the hairline and downwards to soften colour. A light dusting of frosty blush can be added on the top end of the cheekbones.

Brows

The most natural look for brows would be to use an eye shadow that matches a person’s hair colour which is then applied lightly to the brows with an eye brow brush. If brows are sparse, light feather strokes with an eyebrow pencil can be used.

Eyes

A light colour eye shadow should be applied from lashes to brows with a brush or sponge. This is followed by a medium colour on the lower lid, swept up to the crease, or a pearly white shadow to give more definition. The eyelid can be defined by using a medium or dark shade. The deeper the shade, the more dramatic the result will be. .

According to preference, a dark eye shadow can be applied to the lash line, or eye liner can be used. Drawing a perfect line with eye liner will take some expertise hence this should be practiced before the time. If they are going to do the lower lash line, an even, thin line should be drawn. Alternatively a darkish eye shadow can be used instead as this is not as difficult to apply as eye liner..

Lashes

A lash curler can be used before mascara is applied to make lashes look longer. A blond person should use brown mascara for a softer look, while people with a darker skin tone can use black mascara. The choice in types of mascaras is huge, so recommend one that doesn’t irritate the eyes and that they feel comfortable using. Mascara is applied by brushing from the base of the lashes to the tips while rolling the wand to separate lashes and avoid clumping. One thin coat of mascara should be applied to both upper and lower lashes. For a more dramatic look, the first coat should be allowed to dry completely before applying a second coat.

Lips

The choice of lip colour should be one that is complementary to the outfit and enhances the person’s skin colour. One might think that a really purple colour is cool, but will it make the girl look more beautiful? The most flattering shade will be a colour that either matches her lips or is slightly darker. A lip liner should be used to define the shape of the lips and then soften by brushing and blending lip colour and lip liner. This will make lips look plumper, and for dramatic fullness, a lipstick with a hint of frost is a good choice.

A lip liner that matches the lipstick should be used or a flesh tone shade for a soft, natural look. Dark lip liner is old fashioned, so don’t even consider it. To avoid lipstick on the teeth, recommend the following tip: put your index finger in your mouth and then draw it out slowly with your mouth closed. What you see on your finger is what would have ended up on your teeth!

Useful tips for all women:

- Never ever get dressed before you do your make up – you can spill make up on your dress and there is nothing worse than trying to get mascara or foundation out of clothing.

- Dust a lightly frosted powder over your cheekbones for a subtle glow.

- Make sure to blend your blusher into your foundation well or it will tend to look unnatural and add five years to your looks.

- Less is better! Make up should enhance your looks, not emphasise them, so go easy on the quantity of make up. When you are finished, everything should be blended to create an overall alluring look.
Don’t pump the applicator wand in the mascara tube. Doing so will trap air inside and cause the mascara to dry out. Instead, twist the wand to collect more mascara on the brush.

- When choosing an eye shadow shade, keep in mind that a pastel shade will look softer while a darker shade will appear more dramatic when applied.

- The art of enhancing your face should be a subtle one and the perfectly made up face is one that looks like a better and enhanced version of the original. Harsh lines and colours and especially the wrong foundation will not do you any favours. Keep it light and keep it fresh. Discard old stuff and rather keep a small up-to-date collection of make up.
