Tips for healthy nails

The saying is you are what you eat. If your diet is poor and lacking essential nutrients and protein, then this will reflect in the health of your fingernails too. Here are some tips for keeping your nails healthy and strong.
Brittle nails are often caused from a lack of Vitamin A and C. Without calcium nails lose their strength, becoming brittle and dry. You can find calcium in green leafy vegetables, dairy products, sesame seeds or even daily supplements. Avoid soaking hands in water containing chlorine, soap or detergents, as these can all have a drying effect on nails too.
White ridges or spots that appear on the nail can indicate iron deficiency and poor absorption of vitamins and nutrients. Discolouration is often caused by dark nail polishes and is also common amongst people who smoke. Vitamin B12 is great for strengthening, while promoting normal nail growth and healthy colouring.
Yellow or greenish nails are usually a result of a localised fungal infection, in which case, you need to consult a doctor, as there are treatments available for this kind of infection. Healthy nail beds should be pink to dark pink in colour, depending on a person’s skin complexion.
The best way to maintain healthy nails is to eat a well balanced diet. You’ll need plenty of protein as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. Sufficient water intake is also important not only to keep the body hydrated, but it provides moisture for nails too.
Only use a small amount of nail polish remover at a time as this can dry nails and cuticles. Allow your nails to breathe by not having them painted all the time.
